California Coastal National Monument

Established in 2000, the California Coastal National Monument runs the entire length of the California coast (1,100 miles) between Oregon and Mexico, extends 12 nautical miles from the shoreline, and encompasses thousands of BLM administered islands, rocks, exposed reefs, and pinnacles above mean high tide.

Cooperatively managed with other federal, state, local overnment, universities, and private interests, the primary purpose of the Monument is to protect important biological and geological values. The islands, rocks, reefs, and pinnacles provide forage and breeding grounds for significant populations of birds and sea mammals.

I went out with the Boy Scouts to visit Joshua Tree last week. They love the place with all the abundance of its giant rock formations. Never mind that the temperature dropped by 25 degrees right at sunset.

Standing nearly 40 feet tall, the Joshua Tree is not really a tree at all but the largest member of the Yucca family of plants. It was so name by early Mormon pioneers crossing the desert who found the angular branches to resemble the outstretched arms of Joshua leading the Israelites into the Promise Land.

Of particular note are the many unusual plants found here including Joshua trees, cactus,
ocotillo, smoke treess, palo verdes, pinon pins, yucca plants. The best
time to visit is early spring when a big array of desert wildflowers
reach full bloom.

New California Legislature Starts Session

Oh Man! Did a lot happen on the first day of the new California Legislature on Dec 1st. The governor declares a fiscal state of emergency as revenue shortfalls continue to plunge.

The same day Congress starts working a proposal to bailout state and local governments. This proposal will only encourage politicians to continue their terrible fiscal policies instead of cleaning up wasteful programs.

I hate when politicians resort to dump tricks.
